Initiative hopes to close communication gaps

Jump to navigation By  08/04/2021 A new project is asking residents how to close West Marin’s communication gaps. A coalition of agencies and community organizations supported by the West Marin Fund launched a survey this week in the first stage of an effort to bridge language, technology and geographic barriers. “We love living here, but the communication system can be a bit disjointed,” said Mia Johnson, co-chair of the West Marin Equitable Communication Project. “It’s a little bit of a game of telephone at times.” The project’s advisory committee is made up of around 30 organizations, including school districts, utility providers and media outlets, many of which will send out the survey through mailing lists. The survey gathers basic demographic data before diving into questions about modes of receiving information: Whether the recipient has a cell phone, a landline, a computer and social media accounts. Finally, it leaves room for open-ended suggestions

Happy birthday, West Marin Fund

Jump to navigation By  07/21/2021 A healthy community is a healthy community. I know that sounds redundant, but it isn’t really, because when it comes to community, “health” has two completely different but equally vital meanings. The West Marin Fund, now celebrating its 10th year of life, understands that duality as well as or better than any private or community foundation in the world. My evidence? The astounding number of thriving and well-run nonprofit organizations in our watershed that are encouraged and supported financially by the fund, whose staff, directors and active advisors are fiercely intent on keeping them and the communities they serve in good health.

Farmworker housing initiatve fell short of ambitious goal

Jump to navigation By  06/30/2021 Farmworker housing advocates are facing some hard lessons from a pilot project that fell drastically short of its goal. Starting in 2012, a collaborative between the Marin Community Foundation and Marin County used a combination of public and private funds to build and renovate agricultural worker housing on ranches in West Marin. The group initially planned to fund 200 units within five years, but later sharply reduced the goal to 20 units.  In the end, only a dozen units were built, while the need for more affordable housing never went away.  “There were a number of lessons learned, including that using public funding on private land is really challenging,” said Leelee Thomas, the planning manager with the Marin County Community Development Agency who led the project.

Shoreline will take over Tomales preschool, but wait on Papermill Creek

Jump to navigation By  04/28/2021 The Shoreline Unified School District board voted last week to bring Shoreline Acres under its control starting this fall. The move is intended to align the Tomales preschool with the elementary school, boost staff retention by offering employees health insurance and allow for easier access to state funding. While trustees had some questions about the budget, they were ultimately in full support of the proposal, whose cost is covered by tuition, donations and state scholarships.  “It’s been a goal of boards I’ve been sitting on for 20 years to have preschools under the roof of the Shoreline district,” trustee Tim Kehoe said.
