Shapps: Good idea for workers to be fully vaccinated before return to office

Being double jabbed is a good idea but will not be required by law, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said (Dominic Lipinski/PA)
Workers being double-jabbed before returning to the office is a “good idea” but will not be a legal requirement, a Cabinet minister has said, as he ruled out Covid passports for pubs and shops.
The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, said some companies will require their staff to be fully vaccinated but that the Government will not make it legislation.
He also confirmed that while revellers will need proof of vaccination for entry to nightclubs later this year, it will not be needed to go to the pub. ....

GWAS Reveals Multiple Host Genes Linked to Severe COVID-19 Symptoms

GWAS Reveals Multiple Host Genes Linked to Severe COVID-19 Symptoms
July 9, 2021
A global initiative founded in March 2020 called the COVID-19 Host Genomics Initiative has released a comprehensive summary of their findings, which reveal 13 loci in the human genome that are strongly associated with infection or severe COVID-19. The researchers also identified causal factors such as smoking and high body mass index. The results, published in
Nature, come from one of the largest genome-wide association studies (GWAS) ever performed, which includes nearly 50,000 COVID-19 patients and two million uninfected controls. The findings could help provide targets for future therapies and illustrate the power of genetic studies in learning more about infectious disease. ....

COVID-19: Genetics play role in why some people escape effects: study

The study, published Thursday, confirms or newly identifies 13 genes that appear to play a role in susceptibility to infection or that affect the severity of illness.
In a larger dataset, which hasn t yet been published, the same researchers found 10 new locations in the human genome associated with infection or severe COVID-19.
It is among the lingering mysteries of COVID-19: Why do some people catch
it while others – sometimes even sleeping in the same bed – escape without symptoms?
Some of the factors that explain these differences have long been clear: Older adults are more likely to fall seriously ill, particularly if they smoke, are obese or have diabetes. People never exposed to the coronavirus won t get sick, of course, and exposure to a high concentration poses a higher risk for infection. ....
