Monroe soil and water district to award scholarships to students | News, Sports, Jobs

WOODSFIELD The Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District is again helping high school students and recent graduates in the county further their education by providing money toward their college tuition.
The Monroe SWCD will sponsor three $1,000 scholarships for local students who live in the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. Katie Kovaly, district program administrator of the Monroe County SWCD, said the organization has sponsored scholarships for local students for years and plans to continue the program.
In previous years, the organization sponsored two $500 scholarships but has since increased its awards to three $1,000 scholarships, Kovaly said.
“Last year they increased the scholarships. … They decided to go with that again this year, the three $1,000 scholarships, one for each of the home high schools here in the county and the district,” she said. ....

On Friday night, four Monroe Central High School students and a recent graduate were injured badly when their car was struck by a vehicle near Woodsfield. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the second vehicle was being driven by a man under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and taken to jail.

WOODSFIELD Four Monroe Central High School students and a recent graduate were injured when an allegedly intoxicated driver struck their car from behind.
The crash occurred late Friday, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremy Border. He said the vehicle driven by the young adult driver with four juvenile passenger stopped on Ohio 78 just west of Woodsfield at about 10:30 p.m. in an attempt to make a left-hand turn. The four-door car was struck from behind by a similar vehicle driven by Jesse Gray, 27, of Summerfield. The force of the collision pushed the car loaded with students into the guardrail. ....
