The Nigerian Army, Ministry of Justice and the Human Right Commission, on Monday, expressed divergent opinions on certain provisions of the proposed National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Repeal and Re-enactment Bill 2020.
The occasion was the one-day public hearing held by the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters held at the National Assembly.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Ibrahim Atttahiru, who was represented by the Director of Legal Services, Brigadier General MU Wambai, rejected certain provisions of the Bill which excluded the Army, Navy, Airforce, Police and Department of State Services from the Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission. ....

Breaking News | 47 prisoners regain freedom in Nasarawa

The newly appointed Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Justice Aisha Bashir, granted freedom to 47 inmates awaiting trials in four federal custodian centres in the state.
It would be recalled that Justice Aisha was recently confirmed by the National Judicial Commission and subsequently appointed as the acting CJ in December last year following the retirement of Justice Sulieman Dikko.
The first woman Chief Judge in Nasarawa state, made the release Thursday in Wamba Local Government Area during a tour of the custodian centres since her assumption of office in December last year.
The acting CJ said the visit was in compliance with the presidential directive to decongest custodian facilities as part of measure to reduce the spread of COVID-19. ....

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and women rights forums Tuesday condemned the remarks made recently by Prime Minister Imran Khan on the causes of sexual violence and rape, terming them ‘factually incorrect, insensitive and dangerous’.
In a statement, the Human Right Commission of Pakistan said it was appalled by Prime Minister Imran Khan s remarks linking the incidence of rape to obscenity. This is an unacceptable behaviour on the part of a public leader, said the body in a statement.
Not only does this betray a baffling ignorance of where, why and how rape occurs, it also lays the blame on rape survivors, who, as the government must know, can range from young children to victims of honour crimes. ....
