Church Postpones Consecration of Bishop Elect of Rumbek

By Njoki Githinji RUMBEK, MAY 4, 2021 (CISA)-The Apostolic Nunciature to South Sudan has postponed the consecration ceremony of the bishop-elect of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, Monsignor Christian Carlassare indefinitely. “After the incidents in the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, I on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan and in collaboration with the Papal Nuncio to South Sudan H.G Bert Van Megen, and Charge D’ affaires Msgr. Mark Kadima would like to inform the public that the date of the consecration of Bp elected Christian Carlassare is postponed until a later date, which will be fixed as soon as he recovers from the physical and traumatic wounds,” reads a May 2 statement by Archbishop Stephen Ameyu of Juba.

Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, has said that Fr. Christian Carlassare, the Bishop-Elect of Rumbek Diocese is recuperating well in a Kenyan hospital and will soon be discharged. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj this morning, Archbishop Ameyu said, “Thanks to God, he is recovering well and can now walk but he is not yet very strong. He is still in the hospital and yesterday he had another surgery to remove a splinter of a bullet which they discovered under the skin of his leg. He is now much better and might be discharged from the hospital at the end of this week.”

SOUTH SUDAN: 24 Suspects Arrested in Connection with Bishop-Elect’s Shooting in Rumbek By CISA RUMBEK, APRIL 27, 2021 (CISA)-24 suspects have been arrested in connection with the April 26 shooting of Rt. Rev. Christian Carlassare, the Bishop-elect of Catholic Diocese of Rumbek. According to the Elijah Mabor, the Police Spokesperson in Rumbek Lakes States, those arrested include four priests and seven security guards at the bishop’s residence when the incidence occurred on Monday April 26 at about 2:00 am. “All security organs are investigating the detained suspect in connection with incident which occurred at 2 am,” Mabor said. “It’s a well secure place only that there are no soldiers deployed in that area; there are three concrete fences. The criminals sneaked until they reached the third fence where bishop lives,” Police spokes man said.
