The Sarasota County School Board has advanced a policy for next school year that would allow face masks to be optional for students and staff on school campuses. The policy change has to be advertised for 30 days, so the board will not be able to officially enact a new optional mask policy until a meeting in July, but the current mask rule that makes masks mandatory is set to expire on June 30. Rather than simply allowing the current rule to expire, board members on Tuesday night unanimously opted to make an official masking-optional policy to minimize confusion with possible dress code violations and to make it clear that both mask wearers and those who do not wear one are within their rights. ....

On Monday, amid rumors of an anticipated mask protest at Tuesday’s School Board meeting, the district posted a notice to its webpage, reminding people that there is not enough time remaining in the school year to implement a policy change. Any change to a district policy must be advertised for 30 days before the School Board can vote on it. County commissioners voted to hire Hopes as acting county administrator on April 1 to serve in the role until a permanent replacement for former County Administrator Cheri Coryea is hired. Commissioner Kevin Van Ostenbridge, who made the initial motion to terminate Coryea, recommended Hopes for the initial search to fill the interim position. Circumstances surrounding that termination were investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, but that investigation has since been closed.
