Washington, D.C., has loosened the enforcement of the use of magic mushrooms and other psychedelic plants on Monday as Initiative 81, which passed last fall, went into effect. The Entheogenic Plant and Fungus Policy Act of 2020 changes the way D.C. enforces the non-commercial planting, cultivation, distribution, possession and use of entheogenic plants and fungi . Examples of these hallucinogens include magic mushrooms and mescaline-containing cacti. ....

These facilities will be used to grow, process, research and develop functional and future mushroom products, according to Optimi Health Corp which oversees the effort. Optimi anticipates the project, located next to the B.C. Green Pharmaceutical medical marijuana site, will cost $8.2 million to complete, according to its website. Part owner of B.C. Green Bryan Safarik is also the chief operating officer and a director of Optimi Health. The building shells for the mushrooms have been erected with construction completion anticipated in the summer of 2021, said Jacob Safarik, chief financial officer for Optimi Health. ....

Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Confirmed on Thursday That He Will Be Reintroducing His Bill to Legalize Marijuana and Promote Social Equity This Year Chairman Nadler made the announcement in his opening statement during a Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security hearing that broadly addressed federal drug policy. Nadler said that this session, he will again file the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act. That bill passed the House in a historic vote last year, but it did not advance in the GOP-controlled Senate. Nadler said the legislation will “remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and to provide restorative justice for communities that have been disproportionally impacted by the War on Drugs.” ....

On 3/16/21 at 11:55 AM EDT Legislation has come into force this week that has made it easier for people in Washington, D.C. to possess and use natural psychedelics such as magic mushrooms. The Entheogenic Plant and Fungus Policy Act of 2020, also known as Initiative 81, came into effect on Monday. It allows those in the district to use plant and fungi medicines without fear of being investigated, arrested or jailed. Congressional restrictions prevent the district from completely decriminalizing or legalizing natural psychedelics. However, Initiative 81 puts policing against those who take entheogenic plants and fungi among the lowest of law enforcement priorities. ....
