25 Years Ago â 1996 Mandan photographer and studio owner, Craig R. Schmidt, has been named the top photographer in the state and was awarded the 1996 Photographer of the Year by the Professional Photographers of North Dakota at the regional convention held in Minnesota. The prestigious award is presented to the photographer with the highest total score of four photo entries which are judged by a panel of six national photographers. Schmidtâs photographs were put up against more than 500 photos from professionals from the Dakotas, Minnesota and Manitoba. Temps recorded Tuesday, May 28: a high of 70 degrees above zero; 39 above for the low. ....
25 Years Ago â 1996 After 17 years of local ministry, Pastor James G. Kloster will bid farewell to Mandan at his final preaching service to be held at the American Lutheran Church, 1705 Sunset Drive, this coming Sunday. Pastor Kloster helped found the congregation in Mandan in 1992 and assisted in building it from five families meeting in a home to its growth of nearly 50 families. Pastor Kloster is a 1990 graduate of Luther Seminary, Minneapolis, and was in the first class of seminary graduates to be ordained in the just established American Lutheran Church. He is also a U.S. Army veteran and is a member of the Mandan American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pastor Kloster and his family will be relocating to Fargo. ....

25 Years Ago â 1996 Winter has left North Dakota with a final message another 3.1 inches of snow in the Bismarck-Mandan area, increasing this seasonâs snowfall to 77 inches. A slick mix of rain, sleet and snow fell across much of North Dakota, and, once again, regreased roads and slowed traffic to a white-knuckled crawl on many state highways. On the bright side, winter sports, including snowmobiles, sleds and building snowmen, are popular again, and the Huff Hills Skiing Resort can stay open another weekend. Two 11-year-old Mandan girls, Brittany Reemps and Brooke Wehri, gymnasts of Dakota Star Gymnastics will travel to regionals in Kansas City. They are among the top eight finishers at the State Meet in Fargo on March 30 at the optional level. According to their coach Paul OâNeill, itâs the first time anyone from Mandan has ever gone to a regional meet. ....
