General Manor is responsible to the commander in chief, Pacific for management of key military staff activities requiring coordinated Air Force, Navy, Army and Marine Corps operations throughout the Pacific Command area. The Pacific Command is the United States’ largest unified command, encompassing some 100 million square miles from the West Coast of the Americas to the East Coast of Africa and from the Arctic to the Antarctic. 
General Manor was born in Morrisonville, N.Y., in 1921. He graduated in 1937 from Cadyville High School, Cadyville, N.Y., and then received his Teacher’s Certificate from New York State Normal School in 1940. General Manor entered aviation cadet training in November 1942 and received his pilot wings and commission upon graduation in August 1943.  ....

The Son Tay POW Camp RAID: Operation IVORY COAST – Soldier of Fortune Magazine

Operation IVORY COAST was a joint special operations mission executed on November 21, 1970, to liberate American prisoners of war (POW) held at Son Tay, near Hanoi, North Vietnam. The rescue effort, launched from allied air bases in Thailand, was a “mission of mercy,” according to President Richard M. Nixon. If the plan succeeded, Nixon planned to possibly have the freed POWs at the White House for Thanksgiving dinner. A successful raid might also bring hope to the other POWs in North Vietnam and their families back in the U.S. Operation IVORY COAST did not succeed; however, the raid demonstrated that well-trained and rehearsed joint special operations forces could conduct missions deep inside denied areas. American POWs continued to languish in inhumane conditions until the last prisoner was released in April of 1973. ....

Leroy Manor, Air Force leader of Son Tay Raid, dies in Florida at 100


SHALIMAR Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Leroy Manor, whose distinguished military career included commanding the 1970 training of a task force to liberate American prisoners of war far inside enemy lines in Vietnam, died Thursday at the age of 100.
According to the Son Tay Raid Association, a nonprofit organization that commemorates the raid on the prison camp near Hanoi, Manor died peacefully in his home in Shalimar.
Funeral arrangements are pending, according to the association s Facebook page. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the current plan is for a private, family-only ceremony.
Manor s 36-year military career included 72 combat missions over Europe in World War II, including flying over Normandy during the D-Day invasion. Manor also flew 275 combat missions during the Vietnam War. ....

MD Helicopters, Inc. (MDHI) proudly participated in a special Son Tay Raid reenactment on the 50th anniversary of the fateful raid to free POWs in Vietnam that would inspire countless future successful operations. In partnership with the Silent Warrior Foundation, MDHI provided two MD 500 helicopters to transport surviving raiders and POWs from Scottsdale, Arizona, to the Dillon Aero range in Maricopa, where partial reproduction structures of Son Tay prison camp had been built for the occasion.
