CTC rejects Bluefield State College request for satellite campus in Wheeling

The City of Wheeling and Bluefield State College agreed to an MOU in February on using parts of the old OVMC campus for a branch.
WHEELING, W.Va. Following months of debate between officials with Bluefield State College, the City of Wheeling and local college leaders in Ohio County, the West Virginia Council for Community & Technical College Education rejected the request by Bluefield State College to offer three associate degrees at a satellite campus in the city.
The council (CTC) made the motion unanimously to reject any type of offering on Thursday morning. The coordinating board for West Virginia’s two-year higher education system must approve any new associate degree programs for it to begin. ....

WHEELING The West Virginia Northern Community College Faculty Assembly added its voice backing WVNCC President Daniel Mosser in his stance against the memorandum of understanding between the City of Wheeling and Bluefield State College.
The group released a letter addressed to the city both supporting Mosser and asking the city to reconsider the memorandum.
The MOU is a non-binding agreement that allows BSC to explore moving into one of the buildings at the campus of the former Ohio Valley Medical Center. At a city council meeting, Mosser excoriated council members about the agreement, and was joined by Wheeling University Ginny Favede and West Liberty University President W. Franklin Evans that night in voicing their opposition to the MOU. ....

WEST LIBERTY West Liberty University’s Board of Governors on Wednesday announced its support of its President W. Franklin Evans, who joined two other local college presidents last month in a public stance against the city of Wheeling’s effort to bring another college to town.
The statement released Wednesday aligns WLU’s board with the boards from Wheeling University and West Virginia Northern Community College, which also issued public statements in support of their presidents following an explosive council meeting on March 16.
Wheeling city leaders, in their ongoing work to fill vacant buildings at the former Ohio Valley Medical Center which the city acquired last year entered into a memorandum of understanding Jan. 5 with Bluefield State College to establish a branch campus in Wheeling.
