In 2020, Google processed more than 3.5 billion searches a day – and Forbes Magazine reports that most people see search engines as the most trusted source of information. But not all searches produce the same results.
Search engines adjust their recommendations to suit our interests. The big question is how such personalisation can influence our decisions on anything from where to holiday to whether we get a COVID-19 vaccine.
The new QUT-led Australian Search Experience project aims to find out. It invites Australian Internet users to join the project as citizen scientists, and download a simple browser plugin to their computer. To install the plugin, simply go to https://www.admscentre.org.au/searchexperience/ and follow the instructions. ....

“These social media platforms ultimately are commercial enterprises. In part, they make their money from selling access to data, so not all of this content is simply freely available,” says Professor Axel Bruns, a researcher at the Queensland University of Technology’s Digital Media Research Centre. “So much of our lives now happens in social media spaces, in the same way perhaps that in the 1800s or so, letters between people would have been a really important source,” Bruns says. “Interactions and public responses by social media users to what’s happening in the world are a really important source of information not just right now . but also in the future.” ....

The University of Canberraâs 2020 Digital News Report found that more than half of Australians use social media for news, with Facebook by far the most popular.

While about 45 per cent of Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X say they use Facebook for news, and a third of Baby Boomers, the youngest generation has a very diversified social media diet, with high levels also using Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat for news (TikTok was not included in this research). ....
