Dive Brief: Utilities pursuing a centralized energy exchange market in the Southeast on Monday night filed an updated proposal with federal regulators, in an effort to provide more transparency on how the plan would work. Duke Energy, Southern Company, the Tennessee Valley Authority and others are attempting to create a Southeast Energy Exchange Market (SEEM) that would extend the Southeast s current bilateral market, creating a 15-minute energy exchange intended to more efficiently use existing transmission. But the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission raised a number of questions over the proposal last month, and asked the utilities to come back with more details on how the market would improve existing energy transactions in the region, and to provide more transparent details on the proposal. ....
January 29, 2021 This week, 36 major corporate clean energy buyers released a statement outlining top federal policy priorities they see as essential to accelerate the transition of clean energy and reach deep decarbonization. Clean power, for example, is an area in which unity has been emerging among business leaders as well as the general public, contrary to Republican policies that favor fossil fuels. In the latest development, some of the largest corporate clean power buyers in the U.S. have called upon President Joe Biden to prioritize the transition to a zero-carbon energy system. ....
The U.S. Southeast’s biggest utilities have filed plans for a Southeast Energy Exchange Market, an electricity trading platform that they say could reduce power prices for about 50 million people and better integrate the region’s growing share of clean power in years to come. But clean-energy advocates and big corporate energy buyers worry that the plan submitted to North and South Carolina regulators on Friday could divert efforts in both states to explore wider-ranging electricity system planning and integration across the region. Friday’s announcement from Duke Energy marks the first official step in a plan first revealed this summer. The modern, technology-enabled 15-minute energy trading market being proposed would replace the bilateral electricity trading now conducted by the region’s utilities, including Southern Company, Dominion Energy South Carolina and the Tennessee Valley Authority. ....
