State Park Escapes: Burney Falls

Many Northern Californians make McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, the second oldest park in the system, a summer destination. The 129-foot falls tumble from the basalt cliff face, 100 million gallons of water cascading every day from its springs, fed by an underground reservoir. An easy trail takes you down for a closer look, and because the water is 42 degrees all year, you’ll feel nature’s air conditioning as you descend. The park’s Lake Britton has plenty of recreation activities.

Getting There: Fly to Sacramento, then drive 2.5 hours north on Interstate 5 to Redding. From Redding, head east on Highway 299, then north at Highway 89. Redding to Burney Falls takes a little more than an hour. ....

Two columns of one-hundred-foot spruce trees follow along a meandering creek, forming a protective border aside the school playground, trees planted a century before in the aftermath of a devastating tornado, the proud spruce now serving as a wind break aside the crop cleansed fields. The school children use branches from these trees to build forts. There is a lore about the branches, the most valuable graced by insects’ etched designs, bugs the students identify from their studies. INDOT: Project will improve bridge decks in various Counties

INDIANAPOLIS – Numerous bridge decks projects in Fountain, Vermillion and Vigo counties will soon begin, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Work begins at the following two bridges on or after Monday, May 17. There will be one 11’ travel lane across the bridge and motorists will be controlled by a temporary traffic signal. Work is scheduled to be completed by late June.
S.R. 32 at Jordans Branch, one mile west of S.R. 63
S.R. 32 over Wabash River, 1.19 miles east of S.R. 63
Work on the following three bridges will occur this year and another release will be sent with construction time-frames. ....

Seal coat operations scheduled to begin in May

INDIANAPOLIS (WTWO/WAWV) The Indiana Department of Transportation announced Thursday seal coat operations will begin in May.
Depending upon weather conditions, INDOT crews will begin seal coat operations on State Road 358 in Knox County beginning on or around Tuesday, May 4. Multiple locations are scheduled for seal coat operations, with work scheduled to last five-six weeks district wide, depending upon weather conditions.
Typically seal coat operations in one location will last for about four days, depending upon weather conditions, and will be performed under lane restrictions with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone. Once the seal coat has cured, workers will come back and fog seal to lock out moisture and protect the new driving surface. ....
