15,000-year-old Paynes Prairie an ever-changing natural marvel

Paynes Prairie Preserve, the state s first preserve, is a National Natural Landmark.
Paynes Prairie s history dates to the Timucua and Seminole tribes
The prairie had settlements dating back at least 15,000 years ago, with American Indian tribes choosing it because of the sinkhole-fed water resources and the game that was attracted to it.
The Timucua Indians, prevalent in Florida in the 1500s, made Paynes Prairie a major settlement.
“They were very powerful,” Andersen said. “They controlled the prairie. There were a lot of rocks they could make tools or weapons out of, so it s just a very important spot. There are a lot of battles fought over this different factions of the Timucua. ....

COVID-19 updates: Tarrant County hospitalizations hit lowest mark since late September

Dallas County adds 401 new cases
Dallas County health officials announced 401 new cases Friday, bringing the county total to 249,011 since tracking began in March.
There were also 39 new deaths. These ranged in age from a Dallas man in his 30s to a Dallas woman in her 90s.
There are currently 246 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Dallas County. This is down from 268 hospitalizations the previous day.

Game and Fish report an increase in boating accidents in 2020

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said 75 boating accidents were reported in 2020. Officials also said 13 deaths resulting from boating accidents were reported in 2020. In 2019, that number was ten. Injuries requiring medical attention increased from nine in 2019 to 35 in 2020. Arkansas Game and Fish officials said the increase is likely from an unprecedented increase in boating last year, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “We had a lot of new people out on the water, which is what people outdoors we want people to enjoy the outdoors. A lot of times people don t understand how powerful a powerboat or sailboat or even a kayak can be as far as being able to get you in trouble quickly, said Randy Zellers, the Assistant Chief of Communications at Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.Officials also say the percentage of reported accidents is still very low when compared to the number of boats on Arkansas waters. ....

Why did you decide to run for the Richardson ISD board of trustees?
TC: We are at a critical time in our district s storied history. A large bond has been approved for the election with a promise of no tax increase to the citizens. I am a firm believer in public bonds, as they are a win-win. The district, kids and teachers get great facilities, local businesses get work, and everybody generally wins. This is as long as someone is willing to pay for the bond. Historically, it has to be the citizens through increased taxation.
