Flood warning issued for Weymouth


A FLOOD warning has been issued for Weymouth.
The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Weymouth rivers and streams after heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.
The warning comes after crashing waves caused Portland Beach Road to be closed last night.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: River levels are high and still rising at the Broadwey river gauge as a result of saturated ground and heady rainfall overnight.
High groundwater levels are adding to river levels; consequently, there is a risk of flooding.
We believe there is a possibility of flooding for the River Wey to Radipole Lake, Preston Brook and River Jordan. ....

In the late 1760s, angry mobs across the colonies demolished private homes, threatened officials, even tarred and feathered customs inspectors. On a winter’s night 1770, a “motley rabble,” in the words of John Adams, accosted British soldiers with sticks and stones, “shouting and hazing and threatening life.” The Redcoats opened fire and killed five, a sharp turn on the road to Revolution.  ....

Preston Brooks entered the United States Senate chamber with a gutta percha walking cane in hand. The cane stood approximately waist high next to the thirty-six-year-old South Carolinian. The head of the cane was topped with a gold knob.
Alongside Brooks were Laurence Keitt, a fellow South Carolinian, and Henry Edmundson. Keitt possessed a pistol. They waited for the gallery to clear that afternoon. The three had decided beforehand that no ladies be present. The Senate was not in session, but some of the senators worked at their desks.
When the gallery emptied, the three men strode down the aisle to a spot slightly behind the desk of Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner. The forty-five-year-old solon sat silent, absorbed in his writing. Brooks stepped alongside him. “I have read your speech twice over carefully. It is a libel on South Carolina, and Mr. Butler, who is a relative of mine. ....

Work to build bridge over M56 in Runcorn to start in spring | Runcorn and Widnes World


Highways England says that the £23million bridge project will support communities and businesses for decades to come.
The A533 Expressway bridge is a vital connection for people living and working in the Runcorn area, with the communities of Brookvale and Murdishaw on one side of the motorway and Whitehouse Industrial Estate at Preston Brook on the other.
Highways England is writing to people with homes and businesses on both sides of the M56 between junction 11 and junction 12 to give them a draft timetable for the project to replace the current Southern Expressway bridge, which carries the A533 over the motorway. ....
