Raines's charge downgraded to misdemeanor

The former superintendent of Shoreline Unified School District, Bob Raines, has been charged with a misdemeanor for molesting a 9-year-old boy a downgrade from the suspected felony that prompted his arrest on June 8 for lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. 
The misdemeanor charge does not require touch; under its definition, words may constitute an annoyance or molestation. The law refers to conduct that is motivated by sexual interest in a child or in children generally, and which could disturb or be observed by a child. The charge comes with up to one year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000. If convicted, Mr. Raines would have to register as a sex offender. His arraignment plea is set for Aug. 18.  ....

Bob Raines, the superintendent of the Shoreline Unified School District for the last five years, was arrested on Tuesday for lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. The district reported the incident to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office a week earlier and placed Mr. Raines on administrative leave. Detectives developed probable cause, and Mr. Raines was arrested at his home in Petaluma, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. He was released on $50,000 bail and is denying the allegations against him.
Mr. Raines was set to retire at the end of the month after a 43-year career in education. ....

One morning last month, Woodacre resident Tim Cain started his 2009 Toyota Prius, and what he heard sounded more like a Harley Davidson motorcycle. A loud revving noise was coming from under the passenger’s seat, so he laid on the ground and found a large cavity that wasn’t supposed to be there. His catalytic converter was stolen one of more than 350 thefts in Marin this year. A couple hours later, he was in his garden and heard the same sound his neighbor’s Prius had been hit, too. Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise in Marin and across the nation, and law enforcement officers are struggling to catch the culprits. The emissions-control devices contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold that are used in chemical reactions to convert byproducts of combustion into less toxic substances. The body of a deceased man was found Sunday afternoon at China Camp State Park in San Rafael, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
The department released a brief statement online Sunday evening saying it received the report of a possible dead body at around 12:40 p.m. and that “we are currently treating the death as suspicious.” The body was on North San Pedro Road, apparently near the entrance to the popular shoreline park. ....

Teen Jogger Who Reported Marin County Assault Admits She Made it Up: Report

A 15-year-old girl who told authorities in Marin County she was assaulted while jogging on a path in Lucas Valley earlier this month has now admitted she made up the story, according to a Marin Independent Journal report citing the county sheriff s office.
The girl told the Marin County Sheriff s Office she was attacked on Feb. 1 in a wooded area near Mount Rainier Drive, the newspaper reported. She described to authorities a man emerging from behind some bushes and grabbing her but that she was able to get away.
The sheriff’s office increased patrols in the area based on the report and released a sketch based on the girl’s description of the attacker, the Journal reported. ....
