Extended Cut of 'Super Mario Bros.' Discovered and Released

Extended Cut of ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Discovered and Released
When we compiled a list of every video game movie in history, and ranked them from worst to best,
Super Mario Bros. ranked 24th out of 37 titles. But what if the version we saw wasn’t the best possible one? What if there was a superior cut somewhere out there, just waiting to be discovered?
We might now have an answer to that question. In May of 2019, a group of fans say they “discovered a tape containing an extended rough cut of the 1993 cult film
Super Mario Bros.” The cut is about 15 minutes longer than the theatrical release; its additions include “previously-unseen deleted scenes include the Mario Bros running afoul of the (probably Mafia-connected) Scapelli plumbing company, Koopa murdering a technician by de-evolving him into slime, and Iggy and Spike rapping about the overthrow of King Koopa at the Boom Boom Bar. Courtesy of Subjects
For generations, Black women have navigated their lives expecting to battle the immeasurable anguish that stems from gender and racial discrimination. Now that the dust has settled and Biden sets out to execute his vision for the U.S. over the next four years, I couldn’t help but wonder: How will the new administration address this country’s history of gender and racial discrimination? Will I still have no choice but to worry about losing my son or the other boys and men in my family to police brutality or gun violence simply because of the color of their skin? Will I, and other Black women like me, be afforded the same opportunities for career ....

A Daughter Struggles To Escape Her Mother's Shadow In 'Libertie'

Libertie, a new novel by Kaitlyn Greenidge, is inspired by the life of Susan Smith McKinney-Steward, the third African American woman to earn a medical degree in this country.
After the Civil War, Dr. McKinney-Steward opened her own practice in Brooklyn and co-founded the Brooklyn Women s Homeopathic Hospital and Dispensary. Dr. McKinney-Steward was an exceptional woman, a pioneer. But, of course, it can be hard living in the shadow of such a pathbreaker, especially when you yourself are drawn to the simpler pleasures of the conventional.
That s the predicament of the narrator of this novel, who s given the magnificent name of Libertie by her mother a Black female doctor modeled on Dr. McKinney-Steward. Ironically, the liberty our narrator most fiercely desires is freedom from her remarkable mother s grand expectations. ....
