Why McDonald's is supersizing its wages

OR YEARS McDonald’s has been a prime target of the battles of labour-rights campaigners over miserly pay. The day before its annual general meeting on May 20th Fight for $15, an advocacy group, organised a strike of McDonald’s workers in 15 cities across America. The strike went ahead despite the firm’s vow a week earlier to raise wages. The company said that its 36,500 in-house employees will get a rise of 10% on average, that entry-level wages for new hires would go from $11 to $17 an hour and that average wages for all staff paid by the hour would reach $15 by 2024. It added that it wants to hire 10,000 people for the 650 restaurants it owns outright over the next three months. ....

Why Some New York City Restaurants are Struggling to Find Workers

In Bedford-Stuyvesant, Samantha DiStefano closes her Mama Fox restaurant and bar for Sunday dinner and all of Monday because she can’t hire enough workers to cover those shifts.
It’s a similar story in Red Hook, where Susan Povich doesn’t put out all the tables she is allowed at her Lobster Pound restaurant, even as the economy reopens, because she can’t hire enough staff, including servers who could make $2,000 a week.
In Sunset Park, Pat Whelan’s Sahadi’s wholesale food business is short five workers as he finds his business growing as New York-area restaurants expand capacity. ....

Could the Barron political dynasty be overthrown?
Charles Barron is vying to win his wife Inez Barron’s New York City Council District 42 seat, which she is leaving this year due to term limits. The majority-Black district encompases East New York and its subsections such as Spring Creek and Starrett City. Charles Barron previously won the same seat in 2001. His wife won the Assembly seat in 2008 and they swapped seats when Charles was term-limited out of the City Council in 2013, with Inez running successfully to replace him and Charles then replacing her in the Assembly. 
But some have grown tired of the Barrons’ seat swapping, particularly local politicos who say the district is in need of new leadership, pointing to the neighborhood’s high rates of poverty and unemployment, and a recent upward trend in shootings as some of the most pressing issues in the district.
