ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) A former Air Force intelligence analyst says his guilt over participating in lethal drone strikes in Afghanistan led him to leak government secrets about the drone program to a reporter.
Daniel Hale of Nashville, Tennessee, is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, after pleading guilty to violating the Espionage Act for leaking top-secret documents.
In court papers filed Thursday, Hale’s lawyers asked that he receive a 12- to 18-month sentence.
Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of more than five years.
In a handwritten letter, Hale described his role in targeting enemy combatants and his remorse that civilians were killed in the process. ....

William T. Wiley, 1966. Photographer unknown.
LOVING WHATEVER IT IS that you clutch to your chest and call “art” means taking some care of the culture around that word and its objects. It’s a positive gesture to some kind of eternity. It means you love the making of things, and you do not fear those things, nor fear or resent the artist who makes the things you don’t understand. These are the ways I want to love and the ways I believe in William T. Wiley, who died on April 25. I first met Bill Wiley in early January 2015. I was staying near his place in Woodacre and left a phone message asking if I could come by the next day. The voice on the call back early the next morning was barely a whisper: “This is Wiley. Stop over in a little while.” I did. Inside his modest red-barn studio was the sort of artistic effusion and palimpsest o ....

William T. Wiley a founder of the Bay Area Funk art movement who expanded into every medium and style of creation from watercolor to printmaking to giant sculptures in a career that lasted from 1960 until just a few months ago died Sunday, April 25, at Marin General Hospital.
His death was due to complications from Parkinson’s disease, which he’d suffered from since 2014, said his son, Ethan Wiley. He was 83.
A painter with a unique style developed at an early age, Wiley had exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1960 when he was 23 and still an undergraduate at the San Francisco Art Institute. Since then, SFMOMA has come to own 50 of his pieces, with eight of them in mediums from ink on felt and leather to etching on paper on display in a desig ....
