Bill to clarify Utah law governing BYU police force advances to Senate

SALT LAKE CITY A bill to clarify state code for governing private police agencies in Utah like BYU’s police force cleared its first legislative hurdle on Wednesday.
Sen. Curt Bramble’s SB191 won unanimous approval from the Senate Business and Labor Committee after Bramble explained it was the product of work between the Utah Department of Safety, Brigham Young University and state officials.
“I know it’s been a rough couple of years for them,” Bramble said of the Brigham Young University Police Department, thanking it for working with him on the bill. ....

State decides not to appeal decision allowing BYU to keep police force

PROVO The Utah Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday that it will not appeal a recent ruling that allows BYU to keep its police department.
Commissioner Jess Anderson on Tuesday sent a letter to Chris Autry, the managing director of the Brigham Young University Police Department, stating, “I have chosen not to pursue an appeal of Judge Catten’s order on your motion for summary judgment.
“The decision to decertify BYUPD was difficult and weighed heavily on me, but I was left with no alternative, given the evolution of choices made by BYUPD. I respect the decision made by Judge Catten, his time invested into legal research and analysis, and his decision identifying a lack of statutory clarity and guidance under these circumstances,” Anderson wrote. ....

Judge dismisses state of Utah's decertification efforts against BYU's police department

PROVO Brigham Young University will be allowed to keep its police department after an administrative judge dismissed the Department of Public Safety s motion to decertify the department.
The judge s ruling, signed on Monday, comes nearly two years after the university received a letter from the Department of Public Safety on Feb. 20, 2019, claiming that BYU police had not met certification criteria required by Utah state law. The department wrote that due to its failure of certification criteria the state would decertify the police department.

Mike Brower sworn in as new Lindon police chief

Mike Brower was sworn in as Lindonâs new police chief on Dec. 21. Brower comes to Lindon with more than two decades of public safety experience.
Former police chief Josh Adams left his position in Lindon in October to take over as Orem Police Departmentâs chief of police. At that time, Lindon began a search for someone to take over heading up the department.
According to City Administrator Adam Cowie, Lindon City received 43 applications for the position.
âThere were many very qualified applicants,â he said. âAll of our finalists were very capable of filling the role as chief. Having so many great applicants was a good problem to have. We believe it shows that Lindon Police Department has a good reputation with excellent officers and civilian employees that help make it a great police department. Weâre confident Chief Brower will lift our police department to even higher levels of excellence. ....
