After initial fits and starts due to the pandemic, The Grand, downtown Escondido’s newest arts venue and community gathering space, is primed and ready for a busy summer.
The $10 million project was carried out by Escondido’s New Vintage Church, and included the renovation of a 1930s-era movie theater called the Ritz, as well as demolition of a corner building next to the theater and construction of a new two-story building with a rooftop deck in its place.
The project is at the corner of Grand Avenue and South Juniper Street. Although a grand opening ceremony was held last October, the venue endured shutdowns as the pandemic raged during the winter months. ....

The Encinitas City Council met Wednesday in closed session to discuss litigation. In open session, the council interviewed applicants for several city commissions. These applicants were approved: Commission for the Arts, Irene Abraham, Kathleen Lees, Randall Sims; Environmental Commission, Christian Adams, Inge Bisconer, Katie Cramer, June Honsberger, William Morrison; Parks and Recreation Commission, Brad Hanson, Ross Ridder, Steven Winters; Planning Commission, Stephen Dalton, Kevin Doyle; Senior Citizen Commission, Mona Angel, Christie Kramer-LeVander, Maureen Lucewicz, Laura Rau; Traffic & Public Safety Commission, Matthew Loecker, Robert Prendergast. Escondido approves 510-unit housing project at former hospital site


A divided Escondido City Council has approved the 510-unit Palomar Heights project, a development that will replace the former Palomar Hospital campus with a mix of housing types and commercial uses advocates say will spur revitalization of the city’s downtown corridor.
The project was approved last week on a 3-2 vote, with council members Mike Morasco, Tina Inscoe and Joe Garcia in favor, and Mayor Paul McNamara and Councilwoman Consuelo Martinez voting no.
By the same margin, the council voted to exempt the project from a requirement to join the city’s Community Facilities District, a mechanism established by the council last year to recover the costs of providing city services to new developments. ....
