Education advocates and experts told state senators on Wednesday that the disruption caused by the COVID-19 crisis presents a unique opportunity to reform aspects of all levels of schooling and encouraged them to act before that moment passes Massachusetts by.
“I think we’re in a very short window of opportunity, about a five-year window of opportunity, to make transformational, high-quality, systematic, sustainable changes in education, and I’m urgent about our following through on that,” Hardin Coleman of the Boston University Wheelock College of Education and Human Development told members of a Senate committee. ....

Belmont Public Schools implemented the hybrid learning format in December 2020. For some students, it’s been a relief. For others, it has been an obstacle.
Andrea Prestwich, School Committee chair and mother of two Belmont students, said her daughter has decided to stay remote after finding the hybrid model difficult to adjust to.
“I think the reason is [because] you’re going in, but school is not normal,” Prestwich said. “You have to sit 6 feet away from people. You’re 6 feet away from your teacher. You can’t have lunch with your friends. It’s so restricted that it’s just not the same.” ....

McKenzie fills spot on school committee

BEVERLY â Kenann McKenzie will represent Ward 2 on the School Committee after the City Council and the School Committee unanimously voted for her during a rare joint meeting on Thursday night.
McKenzie, who lives on Webber Avenue, will take over the seat which is opening up due to the upcoming resignation of current School Committee Member Kelley Feretti on Jan. 1.
Ferretti announced in September that she would step down due to a lack of respect and professionalism on the School Committee.
During a presentation given before the vote, McKenzie said if she were chosen to serve on the school committee, she would work to create an equitable environment for all students. ....
