Wicked Local Arlington will be implementing body-worn cameras for police officers, after Town Meeting approved the funding for the cameras as part of the town budget, approved on Monday, May 10. The cameras are expected to be implemented by the end of 2021, following approval of an official policy on their use by the Select Board. During the meeting, Chief of Police Julie Flaherty said that since the murder of George Floyd last year, the department has been working on implementing body-worn cameras. “In early June, after the murder of George Floyd, I heard from many community members who had concerns about the Arlington Police Department’s transparency and accountability, and they called upon me to deploy body-worn cameras for our police officers,” Flaherty said. “I believe that a department that deploys body-worn cameras is making a statement that it believes the actions of its officers are public record, just like any police report our officers write. ....
Wicked Local A member of the Arlington Police Department has been placed on administrative leave following a complaint from a Somerville resident who was detained police following a pursuit by officers. In consultation with the town s labor counsel, we determined that this was the best move for all parties going forward while the investigation is continuing, Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine said in an interview. Following an incident on Feb. 10, the Somerville man posted about his mistreatment by the APD on social media. The post has since been taken down, according to Chapdelaine. Chapdelaine said that the investigation needs to determine two key elements of the incident. The first is if police rightfully detained the suspect while they were involved in an investigation, and the second is if the officer inappropriately used force in detaining the suspect. ....

Here are some of the highlights: Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) In a first for Massachusetts, the new law establishes a majority civilian-led commission that will create a mandatory statewide certification process for all police officers.
