Wicked Local Arlington will be implementing body-worn cameras for police officers, after Town Meeting approved the funding for the cameras as part of the town budget, approved on Monday, May 10. The cameras are expected to be implemented by the end of 2021, following approval of an official policy on their use by the Select Board. During the meeting, Chief of Police Julie Flaherty said that since the murder of George Floyd last year, the department has been working on implementing body-worn cameras. “In early June, after the murder of George Floyd, I heard from many community members who had concerns about the Arlington Police Department’s transparency and accountability, and they called upon me to deploy body-worn cameras for our police officers,” Flaherty said. “I believe that a department that deploys body-worn cameras is making a statement that it believes the actions of its officers are public record, just like any police report our officers write."
