How to stay safe while hiking in Colorado this summer

Colorado has thousands of miles of hiking trails to explore, presenting thousands of opportunities to be immersed in the great outdoors, from a paved path at Garden of the Gods to rugged opportunities on the Colorado Trail.
Even a simple trek can present danger, however, and it’s important to follow essential safety practices in order to minimize that threat.
Mitigate risk with the right preparation
Many safety concerns can be alleviated before a hiker even gets to the trailhead.
Part of that is creating a plan and then sharing it with someone else. Hikers should tell someone what trail they will be on, where they are parking and how long they expect the hike to take.   ....

Sheriff's office called on Black hiking group in Colorado

One case where it wasn’t so welcoming happened in 2018 at Beaver Brook Ranch when Newton and Prescott said the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was called when another trail user said their group of 70 people was taking up too much space.
Prescott said the group had broken into smaller groups and that they had been trying to stay out of the way of a woman who was horseback riding in the area who was heard saying, “Get that mob out of here! Get that mob out of here! Someone move that mob!”
“To get police, not just park rangers, but the police called on you for being a group of Black women simply, literally just hiking?” Prescott said. “She called the park ranger and the board of directors and it was very intimidating, and I didn’t understand it, but she just felt we were in her way, and that’s not ok.” ....

Racial discrimination also may increase stress, lead to health problems and reduce cognitive functioning in Black women.
It would be the last hike of the season, Jessica Newton had excitedly posted on her social media platforms. With mild weather forecast and Colorado’s breathtaking fall foliage as a backdrop, she was convinced an excursion at Beaver Ranch Park would be the quintessential way to close out months of warm-weather hikes with her “sister friends.” ....

Black women find healing (but sometimes racism, too) in the outdoors
Out on a hike in Colorado, a large group of Black women were approached by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies, with guns on their hips, asking “What’s going on here?” The most recent National Park Service survey found that 6% of visitors are Black, compared with 77% white.

It would be the last hike of the season, Jessica Newton posted on her social media platforms. With mild weather forecast and Colorado s breathtaking fall foliage as a backdrop, she was excited — convinced an excursion at Beaver Ranch Park would be the quintessential way to close out months of warm-weather hikes with her sister friends.
Still, when that Sunday morning arrived in 2018, Newton was shocked when her usual crew of about 15 had mushroomed to include about 70 Black women. There s a first time for everything, she thought, as they broke into smaller groups and headed toward the nature trail. What a sight they were, she recalls, ....
