Trespasser Nick Hayes, co-founder of the Right to Roam campaign, said the statistic is a “national scandal”. “We all need greater access to nature on a regular basis, for our physical and mental health – our sedentary lifestyles cost society around £8 billion every year,” he said. “That’s one reason why we’re campaigning for a greater Right to Roam over our downland, woods, rivers and Green Belt.”

Nicole Boyd remembers the first time she invited her friend and fellow Chesterfield County teacher Nashara Tucker on a hike. It was to celebrate Boyd’s 42nd birthday.
“I was like, oh, let s do a hike and wine. That would be great,” Boyd said. “I m an adventurer, and I m an explorer. So I will find places that maybe I haven t gone before or by word of mouth.”

Chesterfield Parks and Recreation recently launched an interactive website of water access points in the county. The website uses GIS, geographic information system, technology to plot more than two dozen places to boat, fish or take a hike by the water, including parts of the James or Appomattox rivers.
