TWO musicical maestros used lockdown to fine tune their talents - then scooped awards for their polished performances. Cornet player Lucy McAlees and bass trombonist Mark Gammon triumphed in their respective classes in Riverside Youth Band s fourth annual solo competition. The duo excelled in the intermediate and senior classes and impressed judges in the contest, which could not be held in-person due to Covid-19. A total of 27 performers went online to perform alongside recorded piano accompaniments and backing tracks produced especially for the occasion. Lucy, 18, is head girl at Port Glasgow High and she hopes to study nursing after she leaves this summer. ....
AN inspirational support group is playing a key role in raising awareness about dyslexia and improving youngsters prospects. Dyslexia Inverclyde has worked alongside Inverclyde Council s education department to ensure that young people affected by it are getting the same level of support they need across all local schools. The team have been working together for over a year to help to improve outcomes for children with the learning difficulty. Michelle Wilson, 38, a founder member of the group, said: We had meetings to explain the issues that people were having with their kids at school. There seemed to be inconsistencies between what some schools and others were doing. ....
Brothers Andrew and Calum Telfer run High Branchal Farm with their parents James and Maureen. They sell the milk produced by their 180 cows to Muller, but over the last couple of years they ve been thinking about how they can take back more control of their product. They ve now set up Moovin Milk - a mobile trailer where customers can fill glass bottles with freshly-pasteurised milk, straight from their farm. The brothers hoped to launch the business in May 2020 but were forced to delay their plans due to coronavirus restrictions. They finally managed to launch the business in November and have already built up a loyal customer base. ....
