It’s been less than seven years since woodwind player Alexa Tarantino performed with Earth, Wind & Fire at the Rochester International Jazz Festival a month after graduating from Eastman School of Music. On her forthcoming CD, “Firefly” to
be released on April 16 by Posi-Tone Records Tarantino shows why she’s one of the fastest rising stars on the contemporary jazz scene.
Since moving to New York City she’s played with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, and others, and recorded three albums as a leader. “Firefly” is a showcase for her own vision, gorgeous musical tone, and expertly shaped solos. ....

Dr. Lonnie Smith – “Breathe”
For over 60 years Lonnie Smith has been amazing audiences worldwide with his incredible and unique playing at the organ. Originally from Lackwawana NY, a Buffalo suburb, Smith moved to NYC in the early 1960s where he became George Benson’s organist. Albare –
Albare Plays Jobim, Vol. 2 (Alfi): “Albare Plays Jobim, Vol. 2 by Moroccan-born, Israeli-raised guitarist Albare (the only name given) isn’t quite what it seems. While the names of the musicians and guest artists are listed on the jacket, what is not addressed is the presence of a string orchestra, the only suggestion of which is pianist Joe Chindamo’s designation as “orchestra conductor.”… The album is, of course, a tribute to one of the most renowned Latin composers who ever lived, maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim. Those familiar with Jobim’s music should know pretty much what to expect, slow-to mid-tempo sambas and bossas with sensuous melodies that linger in the mind and heart. (https://www.allaboutjazz.com/plays-jobim-vol-2-albare-alfi-records) Backing musicians include Joe Chindamo (piano, orchestra conductor), Pablo Bincid (drums), Luisito Quintero (percussion), and Ricardo Rodriquez (bass) with guests Randy Brecker, Nestor Torres (flute) and Anton ....

The venerated multi-instrumentalist and composer
Joe Chambers makes a return to Blue Note Records on his new CD, “Samba de Maracatu.” In the mid-to-late 1960s, Chambers played drums for numerous Blue Note luminaries, appearing on some of the decade’s most progressive albums, including works by Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Andrew Hill, Joe Henderson and Donald Byrd. Turning down a chance to record his own disc for the label at the time, Chambers eventually released his own Blue Note album in 1998. For his new disc, Chambers asserts himself more as a mallet player, particularly on the vibraphone. It’s a nine-song set of original compositions, standards, and pieces by Shorter, Hutcherson and Horace Silver. ....
