Bob Dylan queer icon: How the singer gave hope to a generation on the cusp of liberation.

Bob Dylan turned 80 on Monday. Lionized, denigrated, dismissed, and reborn, he was finally celebrated properly, as a great poet, in 2016 with the Nobel Prize in Literature. But on the occasion of his birthday, I would like to offer him one more unlikely honorific: queer icon.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting that Dylan is gay. In his autobiography he celebrated his devotion to the “eclectic girls … non-homemaker types” whom he met when he first arrived in Greenwich Village, and that passion has never wavered. But there’s something else about Dylan that hasn’t wavered either, something that I sensed when he first strode out onto the stage of the Royal Albert Hall in 1965 and have followed as he went electric the following year, as we spoke for my first book on 1968, as I imbibed all of his words and music ever since. I was playing Bob Dylan records at my parentsâ house when he was still an acoustic folk singer, but he was already very important and his lyrics were on point. The delivery isnât just the words, itâs the accentuation and the moods and twists he puts on them. His greatness lies in the body of work. I was at a session for Blood on the Tracks [1975] and really enjoyed watching him record Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, with this incredible depth of storyline, surrounded by all these boring people from the record company who he had sitting in the control room. Belarus has been accused of âterrorismâ after it forced a Ryanair flight to make an emergency landing in Minsk in order to arrest one of the passengers, an exiled opposition blogger critical of the countryâs authoritarian president

Roman Protasevich, who is accused of organising last yearâs protests against Alexander Lukashenkoâs brutal regime, was detained on Sunday after his flight from Greece to Lithuania was diverted after the crew was told by Belarus air traffic controllers that there might be a bomb on board. Minsk confirmed that Lukashenko ordered his military to scramble a Mig-29 fighter to escort the plane. In a statement, Ryanair said the closest airport was Minsk and that the situation had been âout of its handsâ. The plane was over Belarusian ai ....
