LABOUR is calling for new laws to crack down on political lobbying after it emerged that David Cameron tried to put pressure on ministers for government funds.
The former PM lobbied Chancellor Rishi Sunak on behalf of Australian financier Lex Greensill for access to emergency Covid-19 funds for the latter’s firm.
The application was rejected by officials and Greensill Capital subsequently filed for insolvency, putting thousands of steel-making jobs at risk .
Hired by the firm since 2018, Mr Cameron’s shares, once worth tens of millions of pounds, are now useless.
Shadow Cabinet Office minister Rachel Reeves said that ministers should expand the register of lobbyists to cover “in house” lobbyists like the former PM. ....
