COVID-19 not fraying Daytona Muslims' Ramadan spiritual connection

DAYTONA BEACH Since April 12, Mariam Kashif has been leaving the comfort of her bed every morning well before the sun begins climbing above the horizon.
At 4 a.m. she s up and starting to cook breakfast for her husband and three children. At 5 a.m. she s pausing to pray, taking time to kneel down on the floor and praise God.
Once the morning sunlight starts to seep into her west Daytona Beach home, she and her family will begin their daily 14-hour fast. They ll abstain from all food and beverages, including water, until the sun starts setting at 8 p.m.
It s the annual ritual Kashif and her family commit to every year during Ramadan, a month-long holy observance adhered to by nearly 2 billion Muslims worldwide. ....

Urban Daytona Beach boulevard is losing its historic buildings

DAYTONA BEACH Late one Saturday night a few weeks ago, a vicious wind and rain storm tore through the city s core.
When the sun came up the next morning, a two-story building that had stood on Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard for 100 years was taking its last breaths. Part of the roof was collapsing and pushing out a wall. The large sign hanging off the front of the building was tilting precariously, and owners Warren and City Commissioner Ruth Trager were afraid it could crash onto the sidewalk.
In a panic they decided to have the terracotta brick building demolished. Less than a week later not a trace of the early 1920s structure remained. ....

Black history: Daytona trail highlights historic sites

DAYTONA BEACH As the nation celebrates Black history this month, many people driving through the urban core Midtown neighborhood probably don t realize they re motoring past important city history.
A few blocks south of Orange Avenue, there s the 125-year-old boyhood home of Howard Thurman, a mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr. and a friend of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Campbell Hotel, one of the only places a Black visitor could stay in Daytona Beach until the mid-1960s, still stands on Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard. The hotel was also the home of The Stardust night club, where musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie played. ....

City of Racine helping kids, families with technology for distance learning

(ABC 6 News) - Distance learning has been tough for many kids and families.
Now 10 months into the pandemic, many still don t have access to technology like laptops or IPads. But one small city in Mower County named Racine is giving students the help they need.
I can t believe the technology and how they re doing this with COVID, but I’m glad they have something to keep the learning going,” Racine Mayor Deri Nordsving said.
Saturday at Racine City Hall, Mayor Nordsving gave out nearly a dozen IPads to preschool through second-grade students in the area. ....
