Cops, prison officers slam public sector pay freeze 'bombshell'


The freeze is targeted at the core public sector, such as ministerial staff, and officials do not consider police officers part of the core public service.
Information released by the Government as part of the announcement says police and the Defence Force are among the agencies that have to give regard” to the freeze, but police won t say how it will affect its approach to collective bargaining, which is underway.
Core public sector agencies, such as Corrections, are asked to “give effect to the pay restraint.
An email from Corrections chief executive Jeremy Lightfoot to staff, obtained by
Stuff, confirmed anyone in his organisation earning more than $100,000 would not receive a pay rise for three years. ....

Public Service Minister Chris Hipkins said any increases will be targeted at the lowest-paid workers, largely those earning below $60,000, who account for about 25 percent of the public sector.
The public service is doing a good job implementing the Government s COVID-19 response, and we ask they lead the way in supporting the Government as we ensure our spending is targeted to where it is needed most, Hipkins said.
The Public Service Commissioner, who sets the pay of public service chief executives, will also not be increasing their pay.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson said as the COVID-19 recovery gets underway, he s keeping a close watch on debt taken on to support the economy. ....

Public sector workers earning more than $60,000 can only expect pay increases in exceptional circumstances while those on more than $100,000 won t get a cent more over the next three years, the Government says.
Last year the public sector was asked to have nil or minimal pay increases until next month.
The Government says the extended pay freeze is to reduce debt from the Covid-19 response, but the Public Service Association (PSA) says it punishes workers after a year of sacrifice, hard work and success protecting New Zealanders from Covid-19 . ....

The Government is freezing the pay of public servants earning over 100,000 for the next three years, with increases to be targeted at lower paid workers.
Last year the Public Service Commissioner Peter Hughes issued guidance to public service agencies asking them to give minimal or no pay increases to public servants until June 2021.
The Public Service Commissioner updated the guidance on Wednesday to make clear that pay restraint will need to continue across the public service for the next three years.

The Government’s Workforce Policy Statement issued today sets out its expectations for pay and employment relations in the Public Sector, the Minister of Finance and Minister for the Public Service say.
“New Zealand has had an exceptionally successful health and economic response to COVID-19. This has been supported by the Government taking on debt for investments like the wage subsidy that protected jobs, supported businesses and ensured the economy was ready for the recovery,” Finance Minister Grant Roberson said.
“As the recovery gets underway, we are keeping a close watch on the debt taken on during COVID-19 to support the economy. Just as businesses are making decisions as they plan for the recovery, our responsible economic approach means the Government is faced with choices about where new spending is targeted.” ....
