LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The Republican Parish Executive Committee hosted a round-table discussion for topics including the effects of natural disasters on utility companies. Public service commissioners regulate essential utility services.
“We get a report every month on the cost of electricity in Louisiana, and when you look at other states, most months out of the year, Louisiana has the lowest electricity rates in America,” said Public Service Commissioner, Mike Francis.
Francis says, while we generally have lower than average electricity prices in the state, there have been considerable fluctuations in pricing since last year’s storms and the recent ice storm. ....

It was a day in court that shot former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters back into the Wellington spotlight on Tuesday. It’s one of few public appearances since his New Zealand First party failed to return to Parliament six months ago, writes political editor Jo Moir.
Immaculately dressed in suit, tie and pocket square, Winston Peters was back on familiar ground strolling into the Court of Appeal, just a stone’s throw away from Parliament and his former Beehive office.
In the lunchbreak he had a bite to eat at the Backbencher pub, and then forgot to put his phone on silent in court, proving some old habits die hard. ....

Mental Health: Public service watchdog asks Ministry of Health for more information on edited report

Cameron Burnell
Peter Hughes has asked the Ministry of Health for more information.
Within the emails ministry officials openly speculate about ending the report itself, produced since 2005, as it is not legally required to produce it.
Doocey, National’s spokesman for mental health, wrote to the Commissioner last week asking him to look into the matter to keep up public confidence in the system.
This need for public confidence is at its starkest when it comes to the interaction of the public service with vulnerable New Zealanders, such as in our mental health sector,” Doocey wrote.
“A decision to remove information, or even discussion regarding removing information, from a regular report, for the reason that the information includes negative statistics, is deeply troubling.” ....

Talk continues in Texas about massive debts racked up by companies and consumers during February s winter storm.
While some argue the state should rollback its artificially high peak electricity rates, others, including Governor Greg Abbott and House Speaker, seem to want stay the course and not give rate payers a helping hand.
”These people are responsible for what they did. If a drunk driver goes down the road and kills somebody, he s charged with manslaughter. These ERCOT directors and PUC are just as culpable as that,” said Russell Devorsky. ....
