Grand National 2021: Sulekha Varma finally gets to 'conduct the orchestra' at world's greatest race

“Having only arrived in February last year it was pretty daunting,” recalls Varma, 36. “Even though I’d been helping my predecessor, Andrew Tulloch, on race-days for 10 years, that had only involved arriving a couple of days before, getting through the three days and leaving.
“It takes time to get to know the track and the people at any racecourse but my head groundsman, Mark Aynsley, does not need a huge amount of interference from me and I’m inheriting something in a good place.”
A bit like a referee in football, if a clerk of the course is getting publicity it is generally because something has gone wrong. ....

Tributes have been paid to Olympic dressage rider and leading trainer Sarah Whitmore, who “played a big part in many lives in the equestrian world”, who died peacefully on 27 March, aged 89.
Sarah was born at Hilders Farm, Edenbridge, Kent, on 9 August 1931 and remained on the farm her entire life. She grew up in a hunting family, walking hound and beagle puppies for the Old Surrey and Burstow Hunt with her brother Roger. Her father Searle Whitmore owned the Edenbridge Tannery and when hunting commitments permitted, she worked at the tannery, sorting the hides for the Northampton shoe trade. ....

Last week the world’s least surprising news broke – Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte are learning to ride, and reportedly have their own ponies. Of course. The royal family is almost congenitally horsey. “It’s a bit like acting,” says Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine. “If you have a horsey family, it goes down the generations, just like actors’ children often become actors. The opportunities are all there – it would be unusual if at least some of them didn’t really go for it.”  ....

“We will not let this rest” is the position of the equestrian industry as the Government has refused to allow indoor arenas to re-open.
Indoor arenas will stay mainly closed under the latest Covid restrictions, despite a joint campaign by the equestrian governing bodies.
After nearly a week of discussions, it has been confirmed by Defra to British Equestrian (BEF) that apart from some exemptions, indoor schools may not be used.
The BEF, British Horse Society, Pony Club and the Olympic discipline governing bodies led a campaign for clarification on the most recent legislation.
“Our previous agreement with Government that equestrian indoor venues would be classified as outdoors due to their agricultural and airy nature no long applies,” a BEF spokesman said. ....
