Ottoman-Era Bath and Byzantine Doorway Found in Greece

MYTILENE, GREECE According to a statement released by Greece’s Ministry of Culture and Sports, restoration work and surveys at the site of the medieval castle of Mytilene, which is located on the island of Lesbos, revealed a sixteenth-century A.D. bath complex complete with incinerators and vaulted hot, warm, and cold rooms, and a fortified doorway that may have been part of the Byzantine settlement of Melanoudi. The ten-foot-tall door, constructed with nine slabs of local grey marble, was buried in layers of ash from heating the later Ottoman bath. Holes in the lintel suggest it had a wooden door. One of the best-preserved cities of the ancient world, Pergamon sits near modern-day Turkey s west coast next to the city known as Bergama. Pergamon was a prosperous, cosmopolitan city that flourished in antiquity starting with King Lysimachus who ruled from 301 – 281 BC. It became the capital of the kingdom of Pergamon after the fall of the Lysimachian Empire. Then, the Attalid dynasty ruled Pergamon from 281 – 133 BC. It remained a Hellenistic territory until 133, when the city was bequeathed to Rome because Attalus III died without an heir.
The city continued to grow and develop well into the Byzantine era, but the digitalized map recently released focuses on the 3rd century BC, which was the Hellenistic period . The blessing originally stood above the entrance of the church but it was discovered in the more modern church walls, so it had been reused as construction material at some time in the past when the building collapsed and was rebuilt. Taibe was a Christian village in the Byzantine period between the 5th to 7th centuries and later became the site of a Crusader fortress. IAA archaeologist Dr. Walid Atrash points out that while archaeologists have explored the Jezreel Valley for many years, most of their findings relate to ancient Christians, but this discovery is “the first evidence of the Byzantine church’s existence in the village of Taibe.” ....
