Around 1,500 years ago, a beautiful family home was going up in the village of et-Taiyiba in the Jezreel Valley. As befitted a beautiful family home in the late Byzantine or early Islamic period in Palestine, the floors were tiled with decorative mosaics and the walls were suitably thick. And one of the walls of this manse incorporated a repurposed fragment of lintel from a local church, which bore an inscription in Greek. ....

Four Water Cisterns Found At The Ancient City Of Metropolis


This year represents the 30th year of excavations at Metropolis and Dr. Serdar Aybek
, head of the department of archaeology at Turkey’s Manisa Celal Bayar University, told
Hurriyet Daily News that a team of researchers had unearthed four monumental interconnected subterranean structures .
The four water cisterns were found under the acropolis, the highest part of the city, beneath a seven-meter (23-foot) earth fill dating to the Late Roman period, roughly 1,500 years ago. An article in
Archaeology News Network says the people of Metropolis built these cisterns during the Byzantine period as an additional water source to the water resources found in the lower parts of the city. ....

The Great Mountain Citadel of Perperikon and the Dionysian Cult


In its most ancient history, the Perperikon site was nothing more than a natural formation of wind beaten rock. However, its location and strategic position made it a gathering point for numerous cultures and civilizations over time. Its citadel-like role would emerge only later in its historic life: early on it was mostly religious in nature. Prehistoric cultures of Europe - mostly in the Neolithic - were drawn to such jutting rocks, making them an object of worship.
There were plenty of flourishing Megalithic cultures in the Rhodope mountain range, and in fact, Perperikon is clear proof of this - it is the largest megalith collection in the Balkans. This is confirmed with the earliest documented traces of humans discovered on the site, dated to circa 6 ....
