City of Tshwane in court to stop ‘illegal’ bus strike

The City of Tshwane will be in court on Tuesday in an attempt to bring to an end to what it believes to be an illegal strike by Tshwane Bus Service employees.

Spokesperson Selby Bokaba says the city will be applying for an urgent interdict.
“Management has been engaging with the union representatives in a quest to get them to abandon the unprotected strike and to return to work,” says Bokaba.
“But the negotiations were futile as the employees dug in their heels and vowed to continue the strike.” ....

Minister announces ₹30 lakh compensation and job for kin of the deceased
A driver working with the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) succumbed to his injuries after stones were pelted at the bus he was driving. The deceased has been identified as Rabeed Rasul K. Avati.
Mr. Avati, 56, was taking the bus on the Vijayapura-Jamkhandi route when unidentified persons pelted stones at the windshield. The broken pieces of glass caused a gash on the driver’s neck. Mr. Avati, who was bleeding heavily, was immediately rushed to Jamkhandi Taluk Hospital, but could not be saved. ....

While the employees of the State road transport corporations (RTCs) are adamant about continuing the bus strike till their demands are met, the corporations are managing to run more buses every day.
On Thursday, all four RTCs together operated over 4,000 buses. Officials claimed that more number of buses plying on the roads was an indication that more employees were reporting back to work every day. Among the corporations, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operated more than 2000 buses on Thursday. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) operated around 700 buses, up from 372 on Wednesday. The North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) and North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) operated 747 and 628 buses, respectively. ....
