NEW CASTLE – A Shenango Township man accused of firing shots at a school van last year has been sentenced to three to six years imprisonment and two years probation.
Bryon John Benetas, 42, was sentenced in Lawrence County Court last month. He had pleaded guilty on March 6 to aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in exchange for other charges, including attempted homicide, being dropped.
Shenango Township police reported Benetas fired shots the morning of March 11, 2020, in the direction of a van carrying seven elementary pupils heading to school on Old Pittsburgh Road. Two bullets pierced the van and flying glass injured at least two children according to the report. ....

Lincoln High School returns to full remote learning
ELLWOOD CITY – Lincoln High School students are temporarily back to remote learning.
As of Tuesday, the Crescent Avenue building has been shut down, about two weeks after it had partially reopened to in-school classes. The decision was made Monday after five more COVID-19 cases were reported in the building, exceeding the number of cases allowed by the Pennsylvania departments of education and health. Three previous cases had been reported Friday.
The district had been fully remote from early November to Jan. 25 due to high numbers of COVID cases in the region.
Parents will be notified if their children have been identified as at-risk through contact tracing. High school students are tentatively scheduled to return for in-person hybrid instruction on Feb. 23. ....

ELLWOOD CITY – Ellwood City Area officials are prepared for some students to return to district buildings Monday for the first time in about two months.
The district is employing a hybrid attendance system where two groups of students attend classes in-person on different days. The blue group, those with last names starting with A-L, will be there on Mondays and Thursdays. The white group, those with last names between M-Z, appear on Tuesdays and Fridays. Students will learn online the days they are not in buildings.
Parents who are not comfortable sending their children to in-person classes have the option of enrolling them in the district s cyber school. ....
