According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in leisure and hospitality, which includes restaurants and bars, had the largest growth with 331,000 jobs added. Restaurants and bars grew by the largest chunk within that sector, but the report still said leisure and hospitality remained 2.8 million jobs below pre-pandemic employment. In widespread media reports, restaurant owners, in particular, have said they ve had difficulties hiring workers and blamed the issue on extended, enhanced pandemic unemployment benefits. Pat Crawley, who owns El Sombrero Patio Cafe on Espina Street, said her kitchen is suffering due to staffing shortages she blamed on unemployment benefits. She said her restaurant is desperate for cooks, runners, bussers, hostesses and servers. ....
Michael Veal may be new to high school teaching profession, but he is not new to life experiences. The 26-year Army veteran brings a wealth of knowledge, determination and discipline to students at Crossroads High School, Copperas Cove ISDâs alternative school of choice. Crossroads Principal Pat Crawley said Veal inspires all his students to learn and work towards ownership of their education through positive mentorship and dedicated instruction. âMr. Veal is a Title Recovery Teacher who is responsible for providing students with the necessary curriculum to enhance student learning of foreign languages such as Spanish, French, German, as well as Foundations of Physical Instructions,â Crawley said. âMr. Veal also provides additional resources for parents and students to continue the learning process outside of the classroom and offers face to face and online tutorials daily.â ....
Crossroads High School recently implemented a JROTC program in support of preparing students for life beyond high school. The goal of the program is to develop character skills, including critical thinking, leadership, communication, and teamwork. Daily activities include lessons on life and citizenship skills as well as physical conditioning. Career & technology education teacher Michael Veal, a 26-year Army veteran, will serve as the programâs instructor with oversight from Copperas Cove High School JROTC Senior Instructor Chief Warrant Officer III, retired, Enrique Herrera. âJROTC teaches the values of the military. These are important because they create a sense of ownership and responsibility,â Veal said. âThese students will take the first steps to reaching their full potential and increase their chances for success.â ....
