Las Cruces restaurants face staffing shortage as more customers return

The April jobs report showed the economy added much fewer jobs than were expected. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in leisure and hospitality, which includes restaurants and bars, had the largest growth with 331,000 jobs added.
Restaurants and bars grew by the largest chunk within that sector, but the report still said leisure and hospitality remained 2.8 million jobs below pre-pandemic employment.
In widespread media reports, restaurant owners, in particular, have said they ve had difficulties hiring workers and blamed the issue on extended, enhanced pandemic unemployment benefits.
Pat Crawley, who owns El Sombrero Patio Cafe on Espina Street, said her kitchen is suffering due to staffing shortages she blamed on unemployment benefits. She said her restaurant is desperate for cooks, runners, bussers, hostesses and servers. ....
