The Weekend in Scraps: UFC Fight Night 118, Bellator 185 and the Eddie Bravo Invitational

The Weekend in Scraps: UFC Fight Night 118, Bellator 185 and the Eddie Bravo Invitational
Every Monday, the Combat Press staff gathers its thoughts on the previous weekend’s fights and fight news. This feature isn’t a recap and it isn’t an editorial, but rather a bit of both worlds. We’ll scour the best from the combat-sports landscape and deliver it, with some commentary, right here. Let’s get started…

Although many will point to Darren Till’s first-round finish of Donald Cerrone at UFC Fight Night 118 as the biggest story of the weekend, there was something else that took place in Gdansk, Poland, that deserves some attention. Both the main and co-main event featured significant size discrepancies between the fighters in the cage. No, this isn’t a rant about the issues with weight-cutting (that’s for another time), but rather a plea for the UFC to adopt the additional weight classes that the ABC has approved as well as some of those that already ....

NSAC reportedly declines to approve Jose Zepeda vs Pedro Campa

This isn’t NSAC’s first time doing this; they put the kibosh on Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Jaime Munguia back in 2018 and shot down two different opponents for Andrew Cancio last year. To be fair to them, this one was also pretty damn lopsided. Zepeda (33-2, 26 KO) flatlined Ivan Baranchyk last time out and is the WBC top contender, while Campa’s (32-1-1, 21 KO) most noteworthy achievement was fighting Abner Lopez to a split draw in 2019.
Still, there’s no shortage of mismatches that NSAC and other athletic commissions have allowed and will continue to allow, so it’s always strange to see what actually draws their ire. At least Top Rank has plenty of time to find someone new. ....

Regis Prograis believes he is the best Light-Welterweight on the planet and the 31-year-old can prove that proclamation, in what could prove a defining 2021.
Prograis (25-1, 21 KOs) made the assertion on Twitter, before his former foe and unified WBA ‘Super’ and IBF champion, Josh Taylor replied, insisting his rival is the second best 140lbs fighter, behind him.
A rematch of their October 2019 thriller will always be welcome, although it won’t happen any time soon, with the Scot set to face WBC and WBO titlist, Jose Ramirez, to decide the undisputed king this year, but ‘Rougarou’ remains eager to lock horns in the future. ....
