To understand what is at stake with Amazon’s first significant union challenge unfolding this week in Bessemer, Alabama, look no further than Jennifer Bates. The 48-year-old warehouse employee started working at the retail giant’s Bessemer fulfillment center last May and after just three days found the job was bringing her physical pain.

It was a grueling pace that made for days of endless motion, no matter what the physical toll amounted to. Adding to the fatigue was the backdrop stress of knowing her every move was being tracked, she told a Senate hearing in March, and if she couldn’t keep up, ....

The notice was printed simply, in just two colors, and crammed with words. But for any worker who bothered to look closely, it was a remarkable declaration. Amazon listed 22 forms of behavior it said it would disavow, each beginning in capital letters: “WE WILL NOT.” ....

The unionization campaign at Amazon: A top-down operation, with no program for workers

The unionization campaign at Amazon: A top-down operation, with no program for workers
Less than two weeks of voting remain for the 5,800 Bessemer, Alabama Amazon warehouse workers who are deciding whether to accept representation by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). More than 3,000 workers signed cards in favor of a union election in the period leading up to the vote, which began on February 8. Workers have until March 29 to mail in their ballots, with the tally to be announced the following day.

The campaign has been heavily promoted by the Democratic Party and its media affiliates nationwide, as well as by President Biden. But very little has been said of the concrete demands of Amazon workers at the Bessemer warehouse in any fight with management. This is because, in fact, there are none. ....
