Belleair says yes to county fuel tax money

BELLEAIR â Money for local sidewalk repair and other improvements has increasingly become harder to come by, so the Belleair Town Commission has decided to join other municipalities to do something about it.
The Town Commission, which hopes to continue improving crosswalks and other infrastructure, voted 5-0 to join other towns in asking the Pinellas County Commission to maintain the way it disburses the Local Option Fuel Tax, which helps pay for town improvements.
The county keeps 60% and apportions the rest to the countyâs municipalities. Belleair, which receives .23% of the tax from the county, also backs the countyâs plan to raise the fuel tax. ....

Efforts to dress up Belleair driveways hit speed bump

BELLEAIR â Belleair residents who want to use pavers for driveways may be required to sign an agreement that requires them to pay damages and other expenses connected to injuries and other problems created by the landscaping.
The April 20 discussion surrounding pavers across sidewalks â which the town owns and maintains â began after resident Gail Carrol wrote the town requesting permission to replace the sidewalk in front of her home with concrete pavers. At least a dozen other residents have installed paver-driveways but keep the sidewalk running through the driveway apron. Some streets, such as Golf View Drive, donât have sidewalks, so homeowners can install pavers to the street. ....

Three candidates vying for two Belleair Town Commission seats

BELLEAIR â Three candidates are vying for two at-large Town Commission seats in the March 9 election. Commissioner Michael Wilkinson will become mayor; he ran unopposed to replace Mayor Gary Katica, who is retiring after more than 20 years in public service in the city.
One candidate will fill Wilkinsonâs seat. The other winner will replace Deputy Mayor Karla Rettstatt, whose term is ending.
The town faces several major decisions as the new candidates vie for seats, such as whether to invest more than $10 million in a new reverse osmosis water supply system or link to Pinellas Countyâs water system. Belleair would have to disband its water department if the commission approves the county plan. ....

Belleair produces first strategic plan for managing the future

BELLEAIR â It is 51 pages long and required the participation of commissioners, the town manager, the townâs management analyst, department heads, employee surveys, as well as meetings and phone interviews with community leaders, residents, and experts to produce.
It is the town of Belleairâs first strategic plan, a roadmap for identifying and solving issues the small town must solve â and the Town Commission approved it unanimously at its Feb. 16. regular meeting.
The strategic plan was unveiled through a virtual presentation with Angela Crist and Robyn Obdegard of the Florida Institute of Government at USF, who helped Belleair planners create the document. The strategic plan also provides a timeline for identifying, tackling, and resolving issues as well as measuring success. ....
