Saturday’s storms in south Alabama caused sewer overflows in 16 locations in the Mobile area, releasing about 480,000 gallons of untreated sewage, according to the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System.
The Mobile water utility said the overflows were caused when rainwater entered aging sewer pipes, and that projects are underway to update the old sewer lines to reduce overflows.
The overflows totaled an estimated 479,875 gallons, with one estimate unavailable.
Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, Health Officer for the Mobile County Health Department, advises area residents to take precautions when encountering any standing water that may have accumulated because of these overflows. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated ....

County board passes lease, accepts purchase, amends hazardous waste drop-off days

At Tuesday’s Watonwan County Board meeting, the board passed an amended lease for the Watonwan County Fairgrounds, accepted a purchase from the DNR, and discussed household hazardous waste dropoff days.
The first item of business for the Watonwan County Board was a fairground lease for the National Micro-Mini Tractor Pullers Association (NMMTPA) super pull, scheduled to take place at the fairgrounds.
The county charges the NMMTPA $85 for insurance, and $100 a day for the two-day event which features three pulls.
Ed Connell with the NMMTPA requested that the board waive the daily fee for one of the days. The last time the NMMTPA super pull was held at the fairgrounds was five years ago, and the board and the NMMTPA agreed to the same terms in 2016. ....

Parts of Tweed Valley could face moderate flooding overnight

THE Bureau of Meteorology has warned moderate flooding could occur in Murwillumbah late this evening.
Intense rainfall from thunderstorms have been recorded in the past six hours in the upstream tributaries from Murwillumbah, the bureau said in its latest alert.
As a result rapid river level rises have been observed along the Tweed River at Uki and fast flows from Uki are travelling to Murwillumbah.
Murwillumbah is expected to exceed the minor flood level early Wednesday evening and possibly reach the moderate flood level at North Murwillumbah overnight Wednesday night.
Further rises are possible as further heavy rainfall is forecast. ....
