'It's bigger than man:' Looking back at Mobile's flood of 1981

‘It’s bigger than man:’ Looking back at Mobile’s flood of 1981
Updated May 06, 2021;
Mobilians going about their business on May 5, 1981, were no strangers to heavy rains. But they had little idea what was coming.
Hurricane Frederic, in September 1979, had resulted in a federal disaster declaration. Another had come in spring 1980, which saw two rounds of flooding. During one of those, in April, a dam failed at Municipal Park “emptying the lake into Three Mile Creek and ultimately into the homes of Mobile residents below,” according to a Mobile Register report.
Three Mile Creek experienced massive flooding again in April 1981, with hundreds of homes in the watershed taking damage. And yet, incredibly, the worst was still to come. ....

Three Mile Creek confluence project falls short in grant funding

Glenwood Springs City Council will discuss how to proceed with a major funding shortfall for the Three Mile Creek Confluence project, which came up nearly two-thirds short of the $631,771 estimated cost.
The work most important to the health of the riparian ecosystem was estimated to cost $113,559, which includes restoration revegetation, plantings and irrigation. In total, the project is short $391,021.
Last fall, the city applied for three grants two from the Colorado Water Conservation Board and one from the U.S. National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
“We were successful with the two CWCB applications ultimately receiving a total award of $190,000, the maximum permitted via grant funding stipulations and the city’s matching funds,” the meeting documents state. ....

Saturday’s storms in south Alabama caused sewer overflows in 16 locations in the Mobile area, releasing about 480,000 gallons of untreated sewage, according to the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System.
The Mobile water utility said the overflows were caused when rainwater entered aging sewer pipes, and that projects are underway to update the old sewer lines to reduce overflows.
The overflows totaled an estimated 479,875 gallons, with one estimate unavailable.
Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, Health Officer for the Mobile County Health Department, advises area residents to take precautions when encountering any standing water that may have accumulated because of these overflows. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated ....

Without the Mardi Gras parades, Mobile rolls on with road construction

Without the Mardi Gras parades, Mobile rolls on with road construction

Crews are busy at work along Royal Street in February 2021. Typically, road work is halted during Mardi Gras in Mobile so the roads are cleared for the parades. But without any parades in 2021, the road work has continued without much delay. (John Sharp/[email protected]).

Gina Jo Previto is not about to spread a conspiracy theory involving the carved up Royal Street in front of her downtown business and the lack of Mardi Gras parades.
But she’s wondered why the downtown Mobile road project in front of the nightclub she manages has lasted well into Mardi Gras season. The road is part of the regular parade route during Carnival, and any road construction would have disrupted the annual two-plus-weeks of revelry. ....
