March 15: National Flag Hoisted by Parliament The national flag was hoisted with military honours in front of Parliament on Monday morning, marking the anniversary of Hungary’s anti-Habsburg revolution that started on March 15, 1848. Like last year, all other state commemorations have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Though the Kossuth and Széchenyi Awards will also be handed out at a later date, the names of the recipients will be released today. The revolution and freedom fight was part of a series of uprisings in Europe in 1848. On March 15, citizens of Pest gathered in front of the National Museum and demanded independence from Habsburg rule. ....
Hungary’s divisions must be healed and a gentle revolution is needed, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said in a video message marking the March 15 national holiday on Facebook on Monday. “To do this, we need to close the chapter on the past thirty, including the last ten years,” the mayor said. Hungary has become two separate countries because it has been systematically torn into two, Karácsony said. “We can see, hear and feel it on our skin.” This was done using the old method: “divide and conquer, incite half the people against the other half, for it is always easier to find enemies than solutions,” he said. ....
