Big tobacco wants PA police to crack down on counterfeit cigarettes Hannah Phillips, Pocono Record Replay Video UP NEXT An executive at one of the world s largest tobacco companies has said law enforcement in the Commonwealth should be focusing on counterfeit cigarettes.  In Pennsylvania, about 13% of all tobacco products are counterfeited and sold illegally  that amounts to roughly $178 million in revenue that the state can t tax. Northeast Pennsylvania s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, along with the many major roadways that intersect it, makes the region particularly vulnerable to illegal trade, said Hernan Albamonte, head of Philip Morris International s illicit trade prevention in the U.S.

Other Voices: Heavier truck traffic would pose serious safety threat

Other Voices: Heavier truck traffic would pose serious safety threat Scott Bohn © Provided by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Lawmakers in both Harrisburg and Washington, D.C., are talking a lot these days about infrastructure and how to pay for the repair of our crumbling roads and bridges. As the former chief of police of West Chester, Pa., I know firsthand that additional revenue when needed often is siphoned from the budgets of front-line agencies, including police departments and other law enforcement agencies. This means less money that goes to protect our citizens in the commonwealth. When I see proposals that will directly impact law enforcement’s ability to protect the public, I feel a necessity to speak out. One such issue comes from proposals at the state capital and in Washington that would permit heavier trucks on our roads. Not only do bigger trucks cause more damage to roads and bridges, but they also threaten the safety of the public.

Scant diversity in Pennsylvania State Police

Scant diversity in Pennsylvania State Police Mensah M. Dean The Philadelphia Inquirer HERSHEY Walking the halls of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy where troopers are made is like walking through history. Inside the main building, portraits of 36 directors of the training facility are mounted on a wall, spanning more than 100 years of leadership. All, except one, are white men. Down another corridor in the spartan, 1950s-era building, hang the portraits of most of the 111 troopers who died in the line of duty from 1906 to 2017. All, except one, are white men. As of this month, the 4,588-employee state police force was 92.8% white and men make up 86.5% of that, according to agency statistics. Of the 1,170 who’ve obtained the ranks of major, captain, lieutenant, sergeant and corporal, 94.1% are white.
