Nature Narratives writing contest celebrates the natural world

With world affairs consumed by a global pandemic, Penn State Brandywine’s annual Nature Narratives writing competition had to pivot and change to a virtual awards ceremony. The pandemic didn’t stop the beauty and awe of nature nor did it stop people from enjoying it. So, when the call for writings that celebrate the natural world and the environment was issued by Brandywine’s Nature Narratives committee, the poetry and creative writings came pouring in.
The contest was organized by members of Brandywine’s Sustainovation Committee: Laura Guertin, professor of Earth science; Maria Evans, assistant teaching professor of engineering; Samantha Pezzimenti, assistant teaching professor of mathematics; Teresa Slobuski, head librarian; Karen Theveny, assistant teaching professor of communications; and Mandy Santiago, Tyler Arboretum’s executive director. The contest encouraged writers of all genres, ages and levels to think about ....

Road to Commencement: Victor Ficarra

Victor Ficarra, who will receive his bachelor of science degree in business at Penn State Brandywine’s spring commencement ceremony on May 8, reflects on his time as a student at Brandywine.
Ficarra: I chose to attend Penn State Brandywine because I wanted to be closely connected with students, faculty and staff. I knew that making connections was going to be important to my success in college, and Brandywine’s small campus size offered that opportunity. As a commuter student, I liked the campus’ location. I was also excited about the different involvement opportunities Brandywine offered.
I’ve been involved on campus in several different ways during my time at Brandywine. I am a Schreyer Honors Scholar, president of the Lion Ambassadors, peer tutor, captain of the tennis team and a member of the basketball team. Through the Sustainovation Club, I also had the opportunity to do volunteer work that benefited the local community. ....

A number of Penn State students chose to live at home this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. While tackling finals week without the luxuries of the Pattee and Paterno libraries isn’t an easy feat, Penn State’s Commonwealth Campuses could give nearby students a much-needed boost heading into the semester’s final weeks.

The first thing students can do to make the most out of the closest Commonwealth Campus is to switch the location on the Penn State Go app to reflect that specific location. Sometimes it will switch automatically, but other times it must be done manually. Click on the three horizontal lines in the top right corner, select “Change App Experience,” and simply change it to the desired location. ....

DuBois softball drops two games in double-header matchup

DUBOIS, Pa. Penn State DuBois Softball headed into Tuesday’s double-header matchup against Penn State Brandywine in 1st place in the PSUAC East. Tough losses were realized, however, with Brandywine taking the win in both games, 9-5 and 7-0.
Coach Jason Kern called on USCAA National Pitcher of the Week, Lizzy Scott (Morrisdale, Pennsylvania) to start game 1 in the circle for DuBois.
Brandywine scored a quick 2 runs in the top of the 1st, but then Scott and her defense tightened up, and held the opposition scoreless for the next 4 innings. ....

Penn State University Police investigate 'Zoom-bombings'

Two racially motivated Zoom-bombings happened on Monday, targeting diversity events.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Penn State University Police said they are investigating a racially motivated Zoom-bombing, which is when an unwanted person crashes a Zoom video call.
Students said the man was dressed as former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin and re-enacted the killing of George Floyd.
Students said he then showed graphic, vulgar videos; University police are now looking for the man.
It felt violating for sure. I was just sitting there and like, I guess in the moment, I was just like in shock, Penn State University sophomore Abby Frantz said. ....
