Oak Ridge Today Posted at Image courtesy City of Oak Ridge of a proposed sign along South Illinois Avenue/Pellissippi Parkway (State Route 62) The City of Oak Ridge will have its second public meeting on a new sign at the city’s entrance on South Illinois Avenue at 3 p.m. today (Thursday, February 18). The public meetings are to receive input on the design of the new sign, which will be at the entrance to Oak Ridge from Knox County in Solway. The sign will be placed on the island between South Illinois Avenue (Pellissippi Parkway/State Route 62) and Bethel Valley Road. It would be near the exit drivers use to go to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex. ....

The Council on Monday will consider a construction administration contract for the new water plant, which would be south of Bethel Valley Road. It would be able to treat 16 million gallons of water per day. ....

Dennis has compiled the below information for “Historically Speaking.” I am pleased to bring this information to you readers. I also hope we can properly recognize these Revolutionary War veterans with at least one historical marker. I have long been interested in recognizing these individuals but did not have the needed information to confirm the location of the burials. (Photo by John Huotari/Oak Ridge Today) The section of South Illinois Avenue between Bethel Valley Road and Lafayette Drive remains closed after a crash knocked over a high-voltage transmission tower on Friday afternoon, the Oak Ridge Police Department said Saturday morning. The ORPD posted a roadway update at 10 a.m. Saturday. Officers advised drivers to seek alternate routes and expect delays. Police expect the road to remain closed throughout the evening. Both northbound and southbound lanes are blocked. ....
Controlled burns planned on DOE Oak Ridge Reservation Special to The Oak Ridger The U.S. Department of Energy is initiating a series of controlled burns of grassland areas on the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation on the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) Three Bend Area off Pump House and Bull Bluff roads, and other managed grassland areas off Bethel Valley Road and off Highway 58. Continuing through mid-April, as weather permits, controlled burns will take place at: • Freels Bend fields – up to approximately 284 acres of grassland and scrub; • Gallaher Bend fields up to approximately 125 acres of grassland and kudzu; • Solway Bend fields – up to approximately 62 acres of grassland; ....
