City Of Bethel Wants To Demolish Former Yukon Lodge

During their March 9 meeting, Bethel City Council followed up with city administration on a property that it would like to demolish. In February, the City of Bethel initiated the process of removing buildings it had condemned, including the former Yukon Lodge on Brown Slough.
City Manager Pete Williams gave an update on the building s removal. The owners have refused to sell the building, so the city will have to begin the legal process of claiming the building in order to demolish it.

“One thing on this abatement of buildings, I ve only been through one of these. And it s a lengthy process, you know, basically taking somebody s property. It s done in most seriousness, and there is nothing quick no matter whose it is,” said Williams ....

Bethel City Council Extends COVID-19 Emergency Mandates

In last night’s meeting, the Bethel City Council voted to extend COVID-19 related emergency mandates by two months. This includes the airport and mask mandates. It also extended the measure that prevents shut offs for unpaid water bills.
Acting City Manager Pete Williams noted that the CARES Act spending deadline was extended by one year. Congress made the change late on Dec. 21. Given the longer timeline, Williams suggested that the police and fire departments would need additional funding to the tune of $100,000 for the month of December. He also recommended that city council approve only $200,000 of the $500,000 originally proposed for BCSF. City council unanimously approved the motion. ....

Bethel City Manager Search Down To 2 Candidates

The city council has narrowed down its search for a city manager to two final candidates: Janette Bower and Peter Williams.
Bower worked as the Bethel City Clerk from 2002 to 2003. She is currently the city administrator in Wadena, Minnesota, which has a population of 4,100. Williams is Bethel s current Acting City Manager. He served as Bethel City Manager from 2017 until 2019, when the city council fired him in a split vote.
Council members interviewed Bower and Williams on Dec. 8, along with two other candidates. They voted to conduct another round of interviews with the two finalists. ....
